Lamborghini goes hybrid -- Standing International Magazine

May 2022 By Dominique Lamy

Revolution at Lamborghini. The successor to the Aventador, the hybrid Lamborghini which should be unveiled at the end of the year, will be powered by a hybrid V12.

All is well at Lamborghini. Not only did the brand based in Sant'Agata Bolognese, Italy, break records in 2021, with sales up 13% (8,405 cars sold) and a turnover of 1.95 billion euros, up 19%. Operating income also took off with a result that jumped 49% (264 million euros). But Lamborghini has also found the replacement for the mythical Aventador, the cessation of orders and production of which has been officially announced. "The Aventador is the last pure Lamborghini with a V12 engine" Stephan Winkelmann, the boss. “It closes an extraordinary era.”

The successor to the Aventador, which should be unveiled at the end of the year, will be powered by a hybrid V12. Lamborghini must go through hybridization in order to continue to use combustion engines and in particular the V12. Rest assured, the soul of the bull brand will not fly away in the hybrid.

CEO Stephan Winkelmann even promises “a bewitching sound”. He also ensures that electrification will not negatively impact the character or performance of Lamborghini's flagship supercar. "In terms of CO2 emissions, it's a big change, but we're confident it will work," he said. “The plug-in hybrid car that will succeed the Aventador will have a V12 engine, so the sound and the story will stay alive. This new hybrid V12 engine will have nothing to do with that of the Aventador. Its power will be increased. »

It is easier to understand why engineers are using all their energy to improve steering, suspension, brakes and aerodynamics. This is essential work to mitigate the inevitable weight gain caused by electrified transmission. As witnessed during a private test-run, the new sports-curved supercar features a thermal engine with 4 large round central exhaust ports. Pre-production models wear a camouflage that does not allow any guessing about small details. However, the main lines of the bodywork do contrast with those of the Aventador. Some elements stand out, such as the new headlights, large side air intakes and much higher exhaust outlets. Don’t miss this!
